C-NLOPB Announces Planned Closing Date for Labrador South Call for Bids

For Immediate Release
September 29, 2021

The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board is announcing its intention to close Call for Bids NL16-CFB03 in the Labrador South Region on December 22, 2021, conditional on completion and public release of the Labrador Shelf Offshore Area Strategic Environmental Assessment Update (SEA Update) this Fall.

The SEA Update, Co-Chaired by the Nunatsiavut Government, will be the product of a multi-year effort that featured extensive and valued engagement from governments, Indigenous groups and stakeholders. All comments received during the engagement phase on the draft report that are within the scope of the SEA Update are being considered in preparation of the final report.

The C-NLOPB appreciates its ongoing partnership with the Nunatsiavut Government and the contributions of the SEA Update Working Group members as we work together towards its completion.

The December 22, 2021 closing date requires approvals by the federal and provincial governments of a fundamental decision to shorten the previously planned 120 day period between the completion of the SEA Update and the close of the Call for Bids.

The C-NLOPB supports the commitments of the Government of Canada, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Nunatsiavut Government to meet climate change targets and protect environmentally significant and sensitive areas. The C-NLOPB is committed to working closely with governments, Indigenous groups, those we regulate and other stakeholders in this regard.

The SEA Update will support the regional and/or site specific review that is required before any work can begin within a licence area. The timing, spatial extent, and nature of proposed oil and gas activities, in addition to mitigations already prescribed by legislation, will determine the level of additional restriction or mitigation that may be required.
