Energy NL CEO Statement on Tenure of Premier Dr. Andrew Furey

(St. John’s, NL – May 2, 2025) Energy NL CEO Charlene Johnson issued the following statement today on the tenure of Premier Dr. Andrew Furey.

“On behalf of Energy NL, I would like to thank Premier Dr. Andrew Furey for his support of the Newfoundland and Labrador energy industry since becoming premier. Early in his tenure, Premier Furey provided significant support to the Newfoundland and Labrador offshore oil and gas industry as it endured a challenging global price collapse and pandemic. Premier Furey has also provided Energy NL members with a significant opportunity through the Memorandum of Understanding to develop new projects on the Churchill River and he has been a major supporter of commencing a wind and clean fuels energy industry in the province.

Of such importance to me and our association, Premier Furey was always available to discuss issues important to the energy industry, and in particular the supply and service companies who are the core of Energy NL’s membership. He understood the importance and complexity of the industry and was always open to new ideas. Just recently his government demonstrated its commitment to the offshore oil and gas sector by allocating $90 million for offshore exploration, supporting a recommendation of Energy NL and the industry. Even in his final week in office, Premier Furey reaffirmed his support for Newfoundland and Labrador’s oil and gas industry, emphasizing that it is essential for the incoming premier to advocate for the province’s offshore interests in future discussions with Prime Minister Mark Carney.

I will remember Premier Furey as an ally for the Newfoundland and Labrador energy industry and as a premier who cared deeply for the people who work in it and the communities it supports. I wish Premier Furey well as he returns to medicine and the valuable contribution he will continue to make there. Most importantly, I extend my best wishes as he spends more time with his beloved family. Thank you Premier Furey for your immeasurable contribution.”

Energy NL represents over 500 member organizations worldwide which are involved in the energy sector. Members are active in all areas of the supply and service sector and include a diverse representation of businesses that range from offshore supply vessels and helicopters, carbon reduction and sustainable technologies, health and safety equipment and training, engineering solutions and fabricators to law firms and human resource agencies.
