Noia Questions Political Parties on Offshore Oil & Gas Industry

(St. John’s, NL – January 28, 2021) The Newfoundland and Labrador offshore oil & gas industry has faced tremendous difficulty in the last year due to COVID-19 and the collapse of global oil prices. As a result, Noia members involved in the offshore supply and service sector have been severely impacted with thousands of jobs lost and many companies scaling back operations. As part of its ongoing efforts to support its members, Noia has written the leaders of all provincial political parties seeking responses to important questions facing the offshore oil & gas industry.

The questions cover a wide range of industry issues: local content and protection of the Atlantic Accord; support for the local supply and service sector; incentives for offshore exploration and development projects to attract investment and stimulate activity; promotion of the offshore; life-of-field benefits; seismic surveys; emissions reduction; health and safety; and creating a globally competitive regulatory regime.

“This election comes at a crucial time for the Newfoundland and Labrador offshore oil and gas industry. Like so many other industries, our supply and service sector has been devastated by recent economic events and Noia members are looking for action that will help both now, and into the future. We have tremendous potential and need the party leaders to tell us how, if elected, they will ensure we overcome our current obstacles and place our industry and province on a path to reach that potential.”

  • Charlene Johnson, CEO, Noia

Noia has requested that the leaders provide their responses by February 4, 2021. Noia will share the responses received via its website and social media channels. A version of the letter is available on www.noia.ca and is attached for reference.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Oil and Gas Industries Association (Noia) was founded in 1977 to represent the supply and service sector of the offshore oil and gas industry. Today, Noia represents approximately 460 member organizations worldwide which are involved in, or benefit from, the offshore oil and gas industry of Newfoundland and Labrador. Noia members are a diverse representation of businesses that range from offshore supply boats and helicopters, health and safety equipment and training, engineering solutions and fabricators, to law firms and human resource agencies.
