Former Premiers Danny Williams & Brian Tobin to speak at Noia 2014 Conference

Preparations are underway for Noia’s (Newfoundland & Labrador Oil & Gas Industries Association) 30th annual conference being held from June 17-20, 2014 at the St. John’s Convention Centre with a theme of Our Home. Our Energy. Our Future.

Announced today, Noia’s Day Three Leaders Panel on Friday, June 20, 2014 will feature political leaders who have helped shape the past and paved the way for the future of the industry, namely former Newfoundland & Labrador Premiers, Danny Williams and Brian Tobin.  The duo will team up for what is sure to be the most talked about session of the 2014 conference. Mr. Tobin and Mr. Williams are two of the most engaging and expressive speakers and have a unique insight into how our current industry has evolved.

The oil & gas industry has brought Newfoundland & Labrador into a new age of prosperity, one which shows unbound potential to grow and expand into further economic developments if properly managed. Moving into the future, the Leaders Panel will examine the challenges ahead and how our local oil & gas industry should prepare to be well positioned for future success.

Prior to becoming Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador, Danny Williams was a businessman and a high-profile St. John’s lawyer. Mr. Williams was Premier of the province from 2003 to 2010. While still in law school, he led a consortium to get Newfoundland’s first cable television licence and built Cable Atlantic into one of the largest communications companies in Atlantic Canada.   Mr.  Williams was enormously popular as Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and he took on the federal government over fairness in the Atlantic Accord and he fought with the offshore oil industry for more benefits.

The Honourable Brian Tobin is a businessman and former politician, serving as the sixth Premier of Newfoundland from 1996 to 2000. Mr. Tobin was also a prominent Member of Parliament and served as a Cabinet Minister in Jean Chrétien’s government. As Premier, he set an aggressive development agenda and Newfoundland & Labrador’s economic turnaround was dramatic during his tenure.  Mr. Tobin is currently Vice Chair with BMO Capital Markets in Toronto.  He serves as Chairman and Director of New Flyer Industries Inc., and he serves as the Lead Director of Aecon Group Inc.  Mr. Tobin also served as Executive Chairman, President & CEO of Consolidated Thompson Iron Mines Ltd.  Mr. Tobin led the negotiating team that sold CLM to Cliffs Natural Resources for 4.9 billion dollars which was one of the biggest global mining deals in 2011.
