(St. John’s, NL – December 13, 2024) Energy NL welcomes opportunities for its membership that the new Churchill Falls infrastructure projects may bring. The premiers of Newfoundland and Labrador and Québec yesterday announced a Memorandum of Understanding that includes hydroelectric development at Churchill Falls through four significant infrastructure projects that Energy NL members are well positioned to participate in and ensure their success. These projects, combined with our existing offshore oil and gas production and wind-hydrogen energy potential, demonstrates Newfoundland and Labrador’s position as an energy leader in Canada.
“With tens of billions of dollars in infrastructure work announced yesterday by the premiers of Newfoundland and Labrador and Québec, there are significant opportunities for Energy NL members to bring their expertise to the proposed projects. Our members have decades of experience in major infrastructure projects, and we know they will play a leading role in the future development of hydroelectricity in Labrador. Through our expanded mandate to include renewable energy, Energy NL looks forward to working with the provincial government to fully realize our potential through responsible development, including hydroelectricity, offshore oil and gas, and renewable wind-hydrogen energy.”

The Memorandum of Understanding announced on December 12, 2024 by Premier Andrew Furey of Newfoundland and Labrador and François Legault of Québec includes construction of a Gull Island hydroelectric power generating facility, a second facility at the current Churchill Falls site, additional capacity to the current facility, and associated transmission lines.
“The Memorandum of Understanding provides for substantial amounts of additional power for Newfoundland and Labrador that should lead to business growth and additional infrastructure development. We anticipate that growth to occur throughout the province and Energy NL members to play significant roles in the building of that infrastructure. I look forward to working with the provincial government on ensuring our members take a leading role in planning, building, and operating these hydroelectric facilities and subsequent projects in Newfoundland and Labrador. Working together to understand capacity and capabilities and offering connections through actions like supplier development sessions, we can ensure the success of these new projects.”
