(St. John’s, NL – April 9, 2024) The Newfoundland and Labrador renewable energy sector took a significant step forward today with environmental assessment approval of the first-ever wind to hydrogen project in the province, Project Nujio’qonik. On behalf of its 500 members involved in the energy supply and service sector, Energy NL welcomes the approval of Project Nujio’qonik and congratulates proponent World Energy GH2.

“Project Nujio’qonik has undergone a rigorous environmental review process and has proven to be an environmentally responsible project that will also bring substantial benefits to Energy NL members and the entire province of Newfoundland and Labrador. I congratulate World Energy GH2 on receiving environmental approval of Project Nujio’qonik, but more importantly on their commitment to providing a renewable energy project that will provide benefits to the adjacent communities, Energy NL members, and all of Newfoundland and Labrador.”
•Gerry Mayo, Chair of the Energy NL Board of Directors

Project Nujio’qonik will be a commercial green hydrogen/ammonia producer created from 3+ GW of renewable electricity through wind projects located in Western Newfoundland. The project will deliver approximately 250,000 tons/year of hydrogen using 1.5 GW electrolyzers.
“Energy NL has built a strong relationship with World Energy GH2 and we have been proud to support Project Nujio’qonik for the benefits it will provide Energy NL members and to kickstart our wind to hydrogen sector. The company has acted to be a first mover in a competitive industry and environmental assessment approval of Project Nujio’qonik is a key step in achieving that objective. I look forward to continuing our positive relationship with World Energy GH2 as they move forward to achieve a Final Investment Decision for Project Nujio’qonik and seeing the project providing green energy to the world, with Energy NL members playing a leading role.”
•Charlene Johnson, Energy NL CEO

Project Nujio’qonik was registered for environmental assessment with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador on June 21, 2022 and approved April 9, 2024. The environmental assessment process included an opportunity for public comments and Energy NL was pleased to support the project.
