(St. John’s, NL – April 9, 2024) The Newfoundland and Labrador renewable energy sector took a significant step forward today with environmental assessment approval of the first-ever wind to hydrogen project in the province, Project Nujio’qonik. On behalf of its 500 members involved in the energy supply and service sector, Energy NL welcomes the approval of Project Nujio’qonik and congratulates proponent World Energy GH2.

Project Nujio’qonik will be a commercial green hydrogen/ammonia producer created from 3+ GW of renewable electricity through wind projects located in Western Newfoundland. The project will deliver approximately 250,000 tons/year of hydrogen using 1.5 GW electrolyzers.

Project Nujio’qonik was registered for environmental assessment with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador on June 21, 2022 and approved April 9, 2024. The environmental assessment process included an opportunity for public comments and Energy NL was pleased to support the project.
