St. John’s, NL (June 22, 2017) — The 33rd annual Newfoundland and Labrador Oil & Gas Industries Association (Noia) Oil & Gas Conference concluded today with delegates hearing from Natural Resources Minister Siobhan Coady, Suncor Energy and Statoil Canada.
“Despite the lower-for-longer reality, the key sentiment of this year’s conference was optimism for the future of the industry,” said Robert Cadigan, Noia President and CEO. “Over the past three days, we have heard promising updates from the operator community, including further information on Husky’s West White Rose extension project, Suncor Energy’s drilling program with the Transocean Barents, ExxonMobil’s Hebron project, as well as Nexen’s and Navitas Petroleum’s long-term plans for the area.”
“In addition, this year’s conference provided an opportunity for us, along with the provincial government and other stakeholders, to speak about issues critical to the efficient development of our resources – namely, the environmental assessment process. A timely decision on the five CEAA exploration well reviews currently in front of CEAA is imperative. The 22 months taken so far for BP in Nova Scotia, with no clarity on when a decision will be made, is unacceptable and at odds with the process in countries such as Norway.
“It is Noia’s position that the C-NLOPB has the experience and expertise required to be the Responsible Authority for offshore EAs. On behalf of our members, we will continue to lobby the federal government to ensure that a renewed assessment process does not add additional and unnecessary duplication or uncertainty.”
