Energy Minister Andrew Parsons says news of 75 layoffs linked to the West White Rose project a day after Husky Energy got $41.5-millionto keep 330 others employed was a terrible case of bad timing.
Parsons says he only found out about the layoffs 24 hours after making the big Husky announcement, adding even senior Husky officials weren’t aware that the contractor at Argentia was planning to issue the layoff notices the next day.
He says all sides were aware of the slowdown that was coming since no work is ongoing at the Argentia site. But he says the timing couldn’t have been worse.
He says it’s frustrating to put so much work into a good-news announcement yet have it overshadowed by an unrelated event that was known in advance.
Parsons says he shared his opinion on the timing with Husky in an effort to ensure there’s no repeat occurrence.
He reiterated it was an issue between the contractor — a consortium involving SNC Lavalin, Pennecon, and Dragados — and Husky Energy.
