Noia Responds to Regional Assessment Regulation

The following is a statement by Noia CEO Charlene Johnson on the regulation for the regional assessment for offshore Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Noia would like to thank the governments of Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada, particularly Premier Ball and ministers Coady, O’Regan and Wilkinson, as well as the Regional Assessment Committee, for their work to complete the Regional Assessment of Offshore Oil and Gas Exploratory Drilling East of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Noia has been supportive of the concept of a regional assessment for offshore Newfoundland and Labrador as one way to help make Canada globally competitive with other offshore jurisdictions. A regional assessment is a significant step forward in achieving this. Since April 2019, extensive consultation and research has taken place and those efforts are to be commended.

Since the regional assessment review process began over a year ago, COVID-19 has devastated our industry. While the announcement today allows us to be globally competitive on timelines, the Government of Canada needs to take action to also be fiscally competitive with international jurisdictions. To achieve this, we ask the federal government for urgent action to introduce incentives to attract offshore exploration and to encourage development projects to proceed and get thousands of people back to work. We need this action now.”

The Newfoundland and Labrador Oil and Gas Industries Association (Noia) was founded in 1977 to represent the supply and service sector of the offshore oil and gas industry. Today, Noia represents over 500 member organizations worldwide which are involved in, or benefit from, the oil and gas industry of Newfoundland and Labrador. Noia members are a diverse representation of businesses that range from offshore supply boats and helicopters, health and safety equipment and training, engineering solutions and fabricators to law firms and personnel agencies.
