Premier Dwight Ball says the shutdown at the Come By Chance refinery is due to the price of oil, and not the guidelines and regulations put in place by government.

North Atlantic Refining Limited has announced that production at the Come By Chance refinery is being put on hold and the facility is going into “standby mode.”

The Premier says the company will keep their service stations and supply chain in place.

North Atlantic supplies 100 per cent of the province’s propane and jet fuel. Ball says there is inventory of both available to support them through the shutdown.

However, they are not the only provider of gasoline.

Ball says when speaking to other providers, they are now checking what inventory is available—but, he says there is substantial inventory that can be maintained. The same goes for diesel and home heating fuels.

He says they are working closely with all providers in the province to make sure that the inventories are appropriate to see the province through the COVID-19 pandemic.
