(St. John’s, NL – March 12, 2026) It was 17 years ago today that Flight 491 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean and Energy NL joins every Newfoundlander and Labradorian as we remember this tragic incident and reflect upon the impact it has had on an entire province.
“The loss of Flight 491 resonates throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, not just today, but everyday. The loss of 17 of the 18 passengers had a profound impact on our province and our offshore oil and gas industry. As a result, we have taken steps to enhance safety and protect all of those who work in the energy industry, yet we can never bring back the 17 individuals who lost their lives that morning in March. I extend my sincerest sympathies to all those impacted by this tragedy, especially those who lost a loved one, as well as to the sole survivor of the crash.”
Once again this year, Eastern Chaplaincy will host a memorial service this evening (Thursday, March 12, 2026) and all are welcome to attend. The service takes place at Elim Pentecostal Tabernacle, 565 Kenmount Road. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be live streamed at
www.easternchaplaincy.ca.
