Energy NL Congratulates Premier-Designate Tony Wakeham

(St. John’s, NL – October 15, 2025) Energy NL extends congratulations to Premier-Designate Tony Wakeham and all those elected to the House of Assembly via the 2025 Provincial General Election. Energy NL looks forward to working with Premier-Designate Wakeham on energy issues and ensuring a thriving energy industry for the province and a robust supply chain led by Energy NL members.

At the outset of the 2025 Provincial General Election, Energy NL wrote the leaders of the three major political parties seeking their responses to questions on key energy issues facing Newfoundland and Labrador. Energy NL would like to thank the leaders of all three parties for recognizing the importance of the energy industry in Newfoundland and Labrador and for taking the time and consideration to answer our questions. The responses can be read in their entirety here.

Premier-Designate Wakeham said that a Progressive Conservative Government will advocate for the cancellation of the emissions cap as it is a cap on production. Premier-Designate Wakeham also supported incentives for offshore oil and gas projects such as an investment tax credit or the former Petroleum Incentive Program and indicated he would work with Energy NL to review incentives that could be implemented provincially.

With respect to ensuring local benefits for energy projects, Premier-Designate Wakeham said his government would ensure Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are the first to receive benefits from energy projects, would develop a 10-year Energy Plan for renewable and non-renewable energy in consultation with stakeholders, and ensure first consideration for local supply companies as outlined in the Atlantic Accord, while also stating all projects of $500,000 will require local community benefits agreements.

Premier-Designate Wakeham also said his government would ensure a competitive fiscal framework for onshore wind projects to provide clarity for investors and proponents and assist with community engagement.

“On behalf of Energy NL, I extend my sincerest congratulations to Premier-Designate Tony Wakeham. There are several significant issues before us, including a benefits agreement for the Bay du Nord project and ensuring Energy NL members and local suppliers receive first consideration and full and fair opportunity to be a part of all energy projects, including the proposed Churchill River hydroelectric projects. We look forward to constructive dialogue with Premier-Designate Wakeham and the new minister responsible for energy on these issues, as well as establishing a fiscal framework for wind projects that helps spur their development. We have significant opportunity before us and working together I am confident in our collective success.”
