Writing Our Own Future

What an exhilarating few months it’s been for the energy industry in Newfoundland and Labrador with many exciting announcements and developments on the horizon.

Energy NL’s Annual Conference & Exhibition 2022 – held at the St. John’s Convention Centre from May 30 – June 2 – was a huge success and was the perfect culmination of all the exciting developments that occurred over the last few months. Topics such as the approval of the Environmental Assessment for the Bay du Nord project, the Asset Life Extension program for the Terra Nova Project, Pattern Energy’s announcement for a renewable energy project involving wind and hydrogen fuels, the restart of the West White Rose CGS, and our rebrand to Energy NL with the inclusion of renewable energy in our association’s mandate, were all highlights of the week.

With several operator updates, youthful and inspiring professional speakers, as well as leading industry experts and leaders, this year’s conference gave members a renewed sense of optimism and hope for a promising future for the energy industry in Newfoundland and Labrador. Positive news also continued after our conference with a major renewable energy project on the West Coast moving into environmental assessment and Stena Drilling confirming the IceMAX is contracted for bp Canada’s 2023 exploration program. Great examples of our energy mix and the opportunities it can provide Energy NL members.

While I trust your summer plans are now in full swing, there are a few upcoming dates to keep in mind. Energy NL will host its Annual Golf Tournament on Thursday, July 21 at The Wild’s Golf Resort. Selling out this year in record time, our annual tournament is sure to be a fun networking event for members. Also, on Friday, July 29 we are teaming up with the Newfoundland Growlers basketball team for Energy Night at the Growlers. This will be a great night as we take our Newfoundland and Labrador energy from the ice to the hardcourt for family fun at the Field House. Tickets can be purchased directly from the Growlers via [email protected].

As we look ahead to the fall, there will be numerous member-focused events. Notably, the 25th Anniversary of Hibernia, Newfoundland and Labrador’s first offshore producing oil field, will be a cause for celebration and we look forward to sharing that moment with members.

I feel as though we have turned a new page as an energy sector, we have a blank page to work with, and we are writing the next chapter of what’s to come for our industry. I am so proud to see how far we have come and look forward to our continued collaboration and success as we begin to write that next chapter.

I wish you all a safe and relaxing summer.
