The Newfoundland and Labrador Oil and Gas Industries Association (Noia) is frustrated with a lack of a commitment from the federal government to support to the province’s offshore oil and gas industry.
Noia issued a news release Thursday responding to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s answers to questions about the industry posed by VOCM “Open Line” host Paddy Daly on air Thursday morning.
Noia claimed the prime minister’s responses did not provide any commitment or clarity to a request for support “despite months of a crisis in the offshore, advocacy by Noia, as well as information sharing by Noia, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and other stakeholders.”
“Despite being presented with facts about the important contribution our industry makes to Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada and his government’s previous investment in a pipeline, the prime minister did not directly answer any questions but instead made vague references to helping the province and referred to ‘the way the world is going’,” Noia CEO Charlene Johnson said.
“Such a reference only raises more questions and lowers our belief that investment in exploration and development is coming.”
The oil and gas industry, as well as many community and business leaders in Newfoundland and Labrador, have advocating for help from the federal government in recent months to attract investment in the offshore oil and gas industry and to help thousands of people get back to work.
Noia represents nearly 500 member organizations worldwide which are involved in, or benefit from, the oil and gas industry of Newfoundland and Labrador.
